hall.com — an alternative to Microsoft Groove Virtual Office

Well, it’s unfair to compare hall.com to Groove, one of the junior products in MS office package, in terms of features and price, Security, SharePoint integration e.g..   Groove is bloated and closed. Most of my contacts in Groove are no longer with it.

Why I like Hall.com?

Easy to use

No download, install and many-steps signup. I created the first virtual space, they call Hall, even without registration.

It enables virtual realtime communication with chat and different applications like, 4 now.

These applications are realtime enable. For example, every change made in the notepad app will be synchronized to all members viewing this application in realtime, character by character.

More applications I would like to see:

  • draw/digram, collaborative sketch draw. Sometimes it’s easier to explain ideas with a simple diagram.
  • discussion,  foldable posts in Treeview which is a most used tool in team work. It would be better if I will able to enclose picture and files.
What could be better than Groove?
  • It’s lightweight, crossplatform. It won’t slow down computer and stuck your work
  • It’s open and social.  I met a vc, Tim Connors, and Sanjay Kotagiri, . ^^
  • Search. Groove aimed to bring the right people to the right place at the right time. However information in the spaced are isolated and there were no global search.
What’s missing?
  • what if I am not opening the browser or not on hall.com? I am missing realtime notifications.
  • I use more time on iphone than my computer. Will the notifications available?
  • Public Profile/private mesage and hall directory listing for both SEO and easy discovery.
update 1
I received a notification email when I am offline. nice ^^

ssd drive speed testEveryone knows that SSD drive is fast. But do you know how fast is your SSD disk? Does it has the write/read capability as described by manufactory?

Blackmagic Disk Speed Test is a professional software to benchmark/fire SSD disk. Originally this software was designed  for disk benchmarking for high quality uncompressed video capture.

In the lastest update, it will write compressed data to evaluate both performance and readability since some SSDs are using hidden compression writing data.

How to use this software? That’s really simple:

  • download and double click to mount .dmg package
  • run this app, you can drag it into Application Folder or just double click the APP
  • Click the Start in the dashboad interface
  • Now you can see the testing stats and compare it with the  manufacture specification
As usual, the user interface looks really slick and cool from Blackmagic Design, one of the world’s leading post production facilities.

Download this utality from mac app store.
